Due to its wide versatility for treating various health conditions, Traditional Chinese Medicine is becoming increasingly mainstream in western culture. From diet and acupuncture to cupping and Qigong, celebrities are holistically treating mental, emotional, and physical health by using a variety of Chinese medicine practices. Here are four celebrities who have practiced different forms of Chinese medicine:
Duchess Meghan: For Overall Health & In Pregnancy
Duchess Meghan has long been an advocate for acupuncture for ongoing wellness. When having debilitating migraines, she found that cupping and acupuncture helped. She was quoted in The Chalkboard as saying:
"I have been a longtime believer in acupuncture and cupping. I used to have debilitating migraines (hospitalized for them), and acupuncture and Eastern medicine absolutely changed my life. Migraine-free living is a game changer."
Now that Meghan is pregnant, she is continuing her acupuncture treatments in hopes of having a natural childbirth.
We find that many women continue acupuncture treatments during pregnancy as a gentle way of keeping their bodies in balance. Chief Chinese Medicine Officer and Co-Founder Dr. Eric Karchmer says, "Often late in pregnancy most women aren't feeling super great, even those who are having very healthy pregnancies. They may be struggling with digestive issues or sleep issues, or find themselves with more serious diagnoses like gestational diabetes, high blood pressure, or even pre-eclampsia. I've been impressed at how responsive pregnant women are to acupuncture for managing these symptoms."
Jennifer Lopez: For Weight Loss
OK! Magazine reported in 2012 that Jennifer Lopez had recently practiced acupuncture and herbs to lose 15 pounds.
“She’s been gushing about how obsessed she is with acupuncture and herbs" says a source. "Dong Gua Pi [winter melon seed, like cucumber] is Jennifer’s favorite, but she’s been using [many different herbs],” the source adds.”
Acupuncture stimulates endorphins that help reduce frustration and stress, which is a common cause of overeating. Practices from Chinese medicine can improve metabolism and stimulate nutrient assimilation.
Celine Dion: For Fertility Purposes
Celine Dion struggled to conceive. In her early 40s, Dion underwent 5 unsuccessful rounds of in-vitro fertilization (IVF) before she was introduced to Acupuncturist Dr. Aina Zhang (“An Important Member of Celine Dion’s Dream Team”, le Journal de Montreal, 01/06/2010). On the 6th round of IVF, Dr. Zhang flew to Florida for Dion's egg retrieval and then back to New York for the egg transfer. Later than year, Dion gave birth to twin boys, Eddy, and Nelson.
Dr. Eric Karchmer says, "IVF is kind of the opposite of acupuncture in that it's an intense therapy that hijacks the body, from forcing ovulation to the harvesting of eggs. Meanwhile, Traditional Chinese Medicine works with the body to regulate it and complements or enhances each biological function. Acupuncture can help to re-balance the body naturally as the IVF therapy takes over some of the natural behaviors."
Sheryl Crow: To Relieve Radiation Side Effects
During a routine mammogram in 2006, Sheryl Crow was diagnosed with breast cancer. Catching the cancer early allowed Crow to bypass chemo, but she still spent 7 weeks in radiation therapy, which she combined with acupuncture and herbs to offset the unpleasant effects that radiation can cause.
