Coughing is a natural reflex that helps clear the airways of irritants such as dust, allergens, or excess mucus. It’s an important part of the body’s defense system. A cough may be dry and tickly or wet and productive, helping to move fluids out of the airways. While occasional coughing is normal, persistent coughing may suggest the body is responding to ongoing environmental triggers. These can include cold or damp weather, air pollution, or exposure to smoke.
