How are you planning to achieve your goals? Without the tools to achieve our resolutions, the excitement that springs us into the new calendar year typically dissipates the moment work resumes and the daily grind sets in again.
Not so for me. We’re two weeks into 2018 and in full candor, I feel great. I’m mentally strong and physically healthy. Why? Through the consumption of three Chinese medicine formulas and a renewed mindfulness practice, I’m on track with my resolutions and feel as alive as I did when I envisioned how I’d feel if I met my 2018 goals, when I wrote them.
Here’s how I’m going about it.
My passion for Chinese herbs is now well documented. Since launching DAO Labs, I’ve worked with my colleague on potential herbal combinations for just about anything under the sun – from skin and hair issues, to digestive needs as well. For the moment, I’m focused on three formulas:
: I can’t say enough great things about this formula, particularly in light of such an intense cold season. I use it daily to bolster my immunity, and double-up when the kids come down with something or before I get on an airplane. Based off the classic Yu Ping Feng San (“Jade Windscreen” formula), I’ve remained physically healthy despite the cold season headlines and cold weather. Read for more insight.
I augment my morning coffee with this incredible formula, used to provide mental clarity, to reduce stress, and to increase focus. If needed, I’ll drink one mid-afternoon to sprint through the end of the day. Chinese medicine can be complicated and confusing, with this formula proving no different – in addition to the mental benefits, it’s also great for digestion (to this last point I can attest – it works!).
A new sleep formula that we’re testing: we’ve been working on two new formulas for 2018 and I’ve been testing one for the last several months. It’s a game-changer and I find that my restless sleep patterns have gone to the wayside. I wake-up refreshed (typically early) and, wait for it….happy.
My Current Mindfulness Practice
Keeping an active mindfulness practice, particularly for achieving longer-term “balance” (the cornerstone of Chinese medicine) and goal achievement pays dividends in more ways than I can ever explain. I’ve never been great at meditating and have always had problems turning my mind “off” and sitting still (the sleep herbs help with that) so for the first quarter I’ve taken a slightly different approach: I am actively speed walking daily (seriously), focusing on my breathing and one isolated “sound” as I walk (in this case, it’s the sound of the snow crunching under my feet). Whenever my mind starts to wander, I: i) try and acknowledge this; ii) return my mental focus back to the sound. It can be challenging at times to maintain the focus, but the payback to my mental strength is well worth the cold mornings and discipline.
These Are Not My Goals – These Are Tools for Goal Achievement
Note that consuming herbs and daily speed walking do not represent my 2018 goals, rather they are tools that help with goal achievement. By keeping healthy mentally and physically (or in Chinese medicine speak, balanced) I’ve got the energy and stamina to work against both my professional and personal goals, all while remaining mentally unfettered to be a strong colleague, partner, friend and most importantly, father….and to me, that’s what it’s all about.
